Is Trump’s War on Iran an Act of Treason?
If one wanted intentionally to craft a foreign policy and set of strategic actions for the United States designed to undermine its national interests and security as well as the economic well-being of its population, it might be hard to do so and match the playbook Donald Trump has been implementing.
Beyond the fact that Trump violated the U.S. Constitution in engaging in an attack of war without congressional authorization–itself a form of treason–let’s also consider that the U.S. Constitution defines treason as providing aid and comfort to the enemy.
Has Trump provided aid and comfort to the enemy?
This question could easily be answered affirmatively.
Consider the fact–a most cruel and strange irony–that while locked in battle with Iran, Trump also lifted sanctions in order to enable other countries to buy oil from Iran. Indeed, respectable news outlets have reported that the global energy crisis spawned by Trump’s ill-advised and poorly-strategized attack on Iran has actually generated billions of dollars in wealth through oil sales for Iran.
So, let’s put this situation in perspective: while Trump has declared Iran to be a most dangerous adversary, his actions are actually enriching and empowering them.
Last time I checked, Russia was also an enemy of the U.S. Yet Trump has also lifted sanctions on Russian oil, allowing Vladimir Putin to haul in billions to fund his war on Ukraine and his overall assault on global democracy.
Moreover, Russia has been providing intelligence to Iran so they can target U.S. military installations with their missiles.
It’s hard to see how Trump’s actions and policies are not providing aid and comfort to the very nations who are adversaries of the United States.
Additionally, Trump’s actions have substantially empowered Iran. Having no plan to secure the Strait of Hormuz, his war has allowed Iran to seize control of this vital waterway and hold the global economy hostage, to the detriment of peoples and economies around the globe.
In addition to harming farmers’ economic fortunes by choking access to and raising prices on necessary fertilizers, Iran’s closure of the strait, a result of Trump’s lack of thought and strategy, also threatens the global food supply, beyond just surely promising to raise the cost of food.
So, Trump’s war is undermining Americans’ economic well-being as the war has resulted in skyrocketing gas prices, is hurting farmers, and threatens rising food prices and even food supply.
We see Trump’s war clearly harming Americans while enriching and empowering our enemies.
What else would we term this behavior? Treason may very well be the word. They say if the shoe fits, wear it. Trump isn’t just wearing it, he’s kicking Americans in the butt with it.
